18”x24” Oil on Board
My wife and I lived for a year in the mountains, a town called San Christobal de las Casas, a hundred miles North from the Guatemalan border, living among 14 indigenous tribes, Mayan. I just happened to photograph this group in front of a chapel, the ruins are from Tecal beyond the Rio Dulce River. In these jungles are trees that light up the world, a bright read in a sea of green. Much of this work was done with knife, bits and pieces of strategic color and form, contrasting, melding in a place so green. The flat figures represent the art they did those hundreds of years before. Their garb, wool colored, just as they dressed before.
